October 11, 2017 Who is Jesus Part 1

What type of power do words have?

Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.” -- Yehuda Berg

“Cold words freeze people, and hot words scorch them, and bitter words make them bitter, and wrathful words make them wrathful. Kind words also produce their image on men’s souls, and a beautiful image it is. They smooth, and quiet, and comfort the hearer.” –Blaise Pascal

What does the Bible say?

Proverbs 15:4

  • The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.

Proverbs 18:21

  • The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 12:18-19

  • The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

So we see that words have some serious power.

God used words to create

Jesus is “the Word”

Logos- Word, Speech, principle or thought

In reference to God, it is His ability to communicate Himself, and make Himself known, through Jesus Christ.

John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 He was with God in the beginning.3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

Was the Word, was with God, Was God, In the beginning with God

  1. Jesus is Eternal

John 8:58- “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

John 17:5And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

Was Jesus Active in the Old Testament?

Christophanies – Appearances of Jesus in the Old Testament

Angel of the Lord

There are Old and New Testament references to “angels of the Lord,” “an angel of the Lord,” and “the angel of the Lord.” It seems when the definite article “the” is used, it is specifying a unique being, separate from the other angels. The angel of the Lord speaks as God, identifies Himself with God, and exercises the responsibilities of God

In several of these appearances, those who saw the angel of the Lord feared for their lives because they had “seen the Lord.

Genesis 16:11-13

11 The angel of the Lord also said to her:

“You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael,[a] for the Lord has heard of your misery. He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward[b] all his brothers.” She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.”

Hagar calls the Angel, "A God who sees"

Genesis 48:16- "Angel who has redeemed me from all evil."
Mark 2:7-"Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

Judges 2:1,4

Colossians 1:15-17
15 [a]He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For [b]by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He [c]is before all things, and in Him all things [d]hold together.

Hebrews 1:2
in these last days has spoken to us [b]in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the [c]world.
